Bartlett's Quotations

As I write this, I'm at Camp Christian. It's Tuesday morning and during the singing at breakfast the power suddenly went out in the dining hall. The lights went out, the microphones shut off and a planned video presentation had to be postponed. Some of the buildings had power (the camp office, the cabins) but a few minutes later the rest of the camp lost power as well. Was it a storm? No" it was sunny and warm, but we soon learned that a car had struck a power pole on a nearby road that caused the outage. It was only out for about an hour, yet it reminded me of how dependent we have become on our electrical and electronic conveniences.

How many of us would not go out without our cell phones or PDAs? How did we survive the "old days" without those amenities that have become essentials?

We've become so dependent on such things that we forget from where our true power comes. It is God, not Ohio Edison, which gives us power to live and to thrive and keeps us connected to one another and to God.

On our Habitat trip to Michigan two weeks ago, one evening we went to a Lake Michigan beach for a picnic and campfire on the beach. It was a warm evening, the wind was calm, the water was smooth and the sunset was a picture postcard. We enjoyed toasting marshmallows, walking along the shoreline, sitting in the soft sand as the sun turned the . sky brilliant colors of gold and red. Before we left, we gathered around the campfire for a closing worship and just as we began, some large waves broke on the shore. In that moment, the power of God's presence was almost overwhelming as we sang "Sanctuary" and the last rays of the setting sun disappeared over the horizon.

On that beach with the setting sun, singing camp songs in the dining hall with the lights out was a testimony to the power of God that transcends all those things that we depend upon each day. Maybe from time to time we need to unplug everything so that we can plug into the power of God.

Peace,
Terry

New Windows!!
It's about time! In a few weeks new windows will be installed at South Haven United Church of Christ. The new windows will be double glazed and made of "low E" glass. Tnat should help to make the church a little more energy efficient (and reduce noise). They will also work! The operating windows will be awning type and operate by a cranking mechanism. They will be beige in color and vinyl in construction. They will be sealed from the outside and will not require future maintenance.

The new windows will replace the wooden framed windows located in the original church structure... that is, the sanctuary, hallway, secretary's office, pastor's office, choir room and the bathrooms. The boiler room will have windows of glass block.

All of this is made possible by the Capital Improvement Campaign.. The total cost will be $37,650. The work will be done by Barnes Roofing of Bedford. We almost have all the money we need for this expense without borroWing from the Cornerstone Fund. If anyone wants to get their pledge up to date or if anyone wants to become a part of this exciting adventure at South Haven United Church of Christ, now would be a good time. Simply pick up a brochure at church or talk with Judie Quin or Roger Swan.
It's Never Too Soon
Ladies, it is never too soon to start thinking about fall. Yes, I know, summer just got started vacations, kids home for the summer, picnics, games, swimming, lots of fun stuffed busyness - but, you just need some time to refresh from all that summer activity. So, stop, breathe and allow for some YOU time.

To help you do that, think about setting aside time to attend the Annual Women's Fall Retreat at Camp Asbury in Hiram, OH. This will be the weekend of September 22-24' (Friday evening through Sunday afternoon). The theme for this year is - "Holy Whispering - or It's All About Listening." To help get a sense of what God will be sharing with us, the theme verse is:

"Speak, I'm your servant, ready to listen." 1 Samuel 3:10 (Good News Version)

There will be further information in a brochure and on the bulletin board in the near future. For now, block off these days on-your calendar. In the meantime, if you have questions please contact Laura Dory at 216-581-9364 or e-mail at marcygee@gmail.com
